Are You Neglecting Your Inheritance?

Every day, I try to spend undistracted time with God. Lately, it has included a book by Joel Osteen called, “I Declare” which is a 31 day devotional focusing on God’s increased favor and power in your life. One day last week, I finished writing my prayers asking for favor and increase on various aspects in my life. I had extra time that morning so I wanted to delve a little deeper and hear more specifically from God. So, I asked the Holy Spirit to show me a bible verse/story that I was supposed to hear for that moment. I closed my eyes and the chapter, “Jeremiah 2″ flashed across my mind.

And this is what it read:
“Thus says the Lord: What unrighteousness did your fathers find in Me, that they went far from Me and [habitually] went after emptiness, falseness, and futility and themselves became fruitless and worthless?
Nor did they say, Where is the Lord, Who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, Who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death and deep darkness, through a land that no man passes through and where no man dwells?

And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and good things. But when you entered, you defiled My land and made My inheritance an abomination [detestable and loathsome].”Jeremiah 2:5-7

Wow, screeching breaks went off in my head. God was reeling me back in and grounding me to see what was right in front of me. I was praying for more and contending for financial breakthroughs, but God had just revealed that I was on the verge of idolizing things, luxuries and status. He has already answered huge prayers, and brought me out of harmful situations into places of safety and joy. But instead of relishing and soaking in the glory of all these abundant blessings, I was focusing on the next thing!

God wants us to enjoy and steward the “plentiful land” he has already given us. Sit back and reflect on how many prayers God has already answered today. A more rewarding life and satisfied heart will come when we nurture the “land/inheritance” we have already been given. For me, that’s my marriage, my home and my health. Those are all things I have prayed for but could so easily be taken for granted and lost in the priority list of idolizing more.

What inheritance have you been neglecting? What blessings are sitting right in front of you that are waiting for your time, love and nurturing? It could be talents, skills, abilities, a relationship, your health, your finances or your family.

Prayer: God, I thank you for already answering so many of my prayers. I thank you that you have not forgotten about me, and please forgive me for forgetting what you have done for me. Today, I choose to change my mindset. I choose to see the ways you have you shown your love in every circumstance. Today, I choose to have a grateful heart and to be faithful in stewarding your blessings so that they will multiply to bless others too. I thank you that when I praise you, I am in your presence. The only thing that fully satisfies me and makes me whole is being in your Presence. Thank you for never leaving me, I choose to see where you show up in my life today. Amen.
